We have recently laid shingle on an area of our field which has been used as an overflow car park for several years. Having shingle rather than grass will allow the area to be safer and easier to use for our customers, especially as the winter approaches. The shingle will also allow efficient drainage in wet weather, and our intention is to line the overflow area with new trees and shrubs by the roadside.

Unfortunately, we had not realised that a planning application would need to be submitted for this change, and we are therefore retrospectively submitting a planning application to Chichester District Council.

We would be very grateful to any of our customers who would be able to write a letter of support to help the application pass successfully. We are conscious that the car park will get busier as Christmas approaches, and our new food collection service will also increase the amount of cars using the shop. We are also aware that the car park is used for other local amenities by the local community.

If you are able to write a letter of support, please send your letter to Chichester District Council, Planning Dept, Pallant House, East Pallant, Chichester, West Sussex, PO19 1TY.

It is important to quote the reference number 20/02722/FUL in your letter.

The planning application can be viewed here, using the reference number to search: https://www.chichester.gov.uk/viewplanningapplications

This has been an unusual year, and we are grateful for the support of our customers throughout the pandemic. Having an extra overflow car park will help us alleviate the strain on our existing car park as we proceed into winter, especially as on occasion the congestion to park can spill on to the turning off the Main Road.

In March this year we launched a Home Delivery service for local customers over 70, which has continued to operate throughout the pandemic. We are pleased to now also be able to offer a Collection service, available for everyone.

Orders should be sent by email before 4pm Tuesday for collection the same week (we can prepare orders for collection on Thursdays and Fridays). The minimum order value is £20, and payment is taken over the telephone by debit/credit card before collection. More information can be found on our Ordering page via the link below.

Here at Southbourne Farm Shop we are always looking at ways in which we can improve our eco-credentials, and many of our customers are also keen to do the same. With that in mind, here are a few suggestions on what you can do when shopping with us, to help reduce packaging waste.

  • Most of our fruit and vegetables are sold loose, with brown paper bags available for use. These paper bags are very strong, and they should be capable of being re-used many times, before being thrown into the recycling.

  • Many of our customers already bring their own carrier bags. We have strong natural fibre Farm Shop canvas bags available for sale, and we are also able to offer strong cardboard boxes for your shopping. If you would like a cardboard box, please ask at the till.

  • Our milk refill station offers fresh local non-homogenised pasteurised milk in one litre refillable glass bottles. If you haven't already tried it, please do give it a go. This service has significantly decreased the amount of milk in plastic containers that we sell.

  • Our hugely popular range of Field Fare loose frozen produce can be purchased in your own re-usable containers. Simply take your container (takeaway box, tupperware etc) to the till before filling it up, and we can weigh it before you fill it. When paying for your goods, we can then deduct the cost of the container's weight from the total.

  • Johnsons Fishmongers - who are with us on Tuesdays and Fridays - are happy to place your fish in your own re-usable containers, rather than using a plastic bag.

  • Our own artisan bread is sold without a plastic bag. Paper bags are available, or of course you are welcome to use your own.

  • Please return any empty egg boxes that you have, as we can re-use them.
